UNCDC Matzo Development Groundbreaking

United Neighborhood Community Development Corporation (UNCDC), UNC’s nonprofit housing and economic development arm, hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for the Matzo Development in Scranton’s Pine Brook neighborhood on Friday, October 11, 2024.

This exciting project, part of United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Pine Brook Neighborhood Plan, will bring much-needed housing and commercial space to Capouse Avenue while returning a vacant property to productive use. The site, once home to the Matzo family and Matzo Market, also honors the legacy of 1940s film star Lizabeth Scott, born Emma Matzo.

A special thanks to everyone who joined us to celebrate, including James Caffrey, UNCDC Board Chair; Senator Marty Flynn; Rep. Bridget M. Kosierowski; Commissioner Bill Gaughan; Shelby Rexrode from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA); and Jaime Ryan from PNC. Each shared valuable insights on how this development will impact our community.

We’d also like to thank the funders who made this project possible: the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency’s Community Revitalization Fund Program, the City of Scranton Government Home Program, and PNC Bank. Their generous support will have a tremendous impact on Pine Brook’s ongoing revitalization.

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue working to build a stronger, more vibrant Pine Brook neighborhood.
